As we discussed in the previous post, moving time is purging time. Along with every move comes the need to get rid of items that you no longer need or want.
Here are some ways that we at Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., suggest that you get rid of items:
The first place to look is family and friends. There are items in families that are handed down from generation to generation and should continue on that path. Good quality heirlooms, antiques, glassware, silver, artwork, and more can go to family members and friends if you are ready to get rid of them.
The next place to consider is local ministries. In a disaster situation, ministries can give donated items to people who have lost everything. Churches often know of families and individuals in need of gently used furniture, appliances, and household items. Besides churches, there are several ministries here in the local Roanoke area that are always looking for gently used furniture and household items. We like to recommend donating to the Roanoke Rescue Mission. The Rescue Mission does a great service housing people and feeding the hungry.
You can also consider organizations like GoodWill and AmVets. These organizations often will even pick up certain items that you are donating right from your home. In many cases there’s a tax write-off, so you get a value for your donation. Make sure you get a receipt for tax purposes.
Of course there is the option to sell items you want to get rid of. Having a moving sale/yard sale or posting items for sale on Craigslist or Facebook seem to be the most popular ways of selling items before a move.
Items can be taken to auction houses or consignment houses. These kinds of places will sell your items for you and keep a percentage of the sale price. Some auction houses will buy the entire contents of a house if someone is moving out or if someone passes away. Then it’s the auction house’s responsibility to get the contents out of the house.
Items often end up with our crew members. Many times our customers decide on moving day not to move several items. Our customers often offer these items to the crew.
Do you have items to get rid of that are not in good enough condition to give, donate, or sell? In our next post we’ll cover how to get rid of junk. We are committed to being a moving company that gives thorough information to our customers to make their moves as low-stress as possible. If you are looking for a moving company in Roanoke, Salem, Vinton, Blacksburg, Smith Mountain Lake, or Botetourt County, call Heritage Moving & Storage, Inc., for full-service moving, packing, and storage.
